Room-by-room packing checklist

Pack one room at a time from least-used to most-used, label every box with the room and contents, and keep an “open first” box of essentials so your move stays organised and nothing goes missing.

Start with the rooms you use least

Begin with store rooms, guest bedrooms and the top shelves of wardrobes — anything you won’t need before the move. Wrap crockery and glassware in newspaper or cloth, stand plates on their edge rather than flat, and never leave a box so heavy that one person cannot lift it.

The kitchen is usually the slowest room, so give it a full day of its own. Empty and dry the fridge, decant loose spices into sealed bags, and keep sharp knives wrapped and clearly marked so no one is cut while unloading.

Label, list and keep essentials aside

Write the room name and a few contents on the top and one side of each box, and number them so you can check the full count against a simple list on arrival. Mark anything fragile clearly and note which boxes must stay upright.

Pack one “open first” box per person with a change of clothes, chargers, medicines, toiletries and basic bedding, and carry documents, jewellery and cash yourself rather than loading them onto the truck.

FAQ

Taxi on a daily city route in Islamabad
How far in advance should I start packing?

Start with rarely-used rooms one to two weeks ahead and leave only daily-use items for the last day. Spreading it out avoids a rushed, chaotic final night and reduces breakages.

What should I not pack in the moving boxes?

Keep documents, jewellery, cash, medicines and chargers with you, and avoid packing gas cylinders, petrol or other flammable items — hand those over separately and safely.
