Safety first

Steer to the hard shoulder or the roadside, put on the hazard lights, and if it’s dark or fast-moving traffic, stand well away from the car rather than beside it. On the motorway or Expressway, get behind the barrier if there is one.

Don’t make it worse

If the temperature gauge is in the red or a warning light is on, stop — driving on can destroy the engine. Don’t open a hot radiator cap. If you smell fuel or see smoke, get everyone out. Then call for a 24/7 emergency mechanic with your exact location; if the car can’t be driven, we arrange recovery.
