Selling Your Car: Paperwork Checklist

To sell your car cleanly, gather the registration book and file, clear any outstanding token tax, complete a proper ownership transfer with biometric verification, and keep signed copies of everything — so liability passes to the buyer and disputes cannot come back to you.

Gather and check your documents first

Before you advertise, make sure your paperwork is in order. Locate the original registration book (or smart card) and the vehicle file, confirm your details match your CNIC, and check that token tax is up to date — an outstanding tax can stall the sale or reduce what buyers will offer. If the car was ever financed, ensure any bank hypothecation or lien has been formally cleared and released, otherwise the transfer cannot complete.

If you bought the car on an open letter rather than a completed transfer, resolve that before selling on, as an unbroken chain of ownership is far cleaner and more trustworthy for the next buyer. Having the service history, previous invoices and any conversion or inspection certificates ready also builds confidence and helps you justify your asking price.

Complete the transfer and protect yourself

The single most important step is a proper ownership transfer into the buyer’s name, not a handshake or an open letter left dangling. Modern transfers involve biometric verification of the parties, so plan for the buyer and seller to attend or provide what the excise authority requires. Completing the transfer removes your name from the vehicle and, with it, future liability for tax, fines or anything the car is involved in.

Protect yourself throughout the handover. Confirm the buyer’s identity, keep signed copies of the transfer documents and a simple sale receipt noting the vehicle details and date, and only hand over the keys and papers once payment has genuinely cleared. Keeping your own record of the completed transfer means that if any question arises later, you can show clearly that ownership — and responsibility — had already passed to the buyer.

FAQ

Taxi on a daily city route in Islamabad
What documents do I need to sell my car?

At minimum the registration book or smart card and the vehicle file, your CNIC, up-to-date token tax and proof that any finance has been cleared. Service history and inspection or conversion certificates are useful extras that reassure buyers.

Why should I insist on a full transfer instead of an open letter?

A completed transfer moves the car out of your name, so you are no longer liable for its tax, fines or involvement in incidents. An open letter leaves the registration in your name and exposes you to future disputes, which is why a proper transfer is far safer.
